BANGAKU, a traditional performing art

A Local Performing Arts from Mt. Chokai Worship

Summary

There is a local traditional performing art called Bangaku around Akita and Yamagata. Though it is still veiled, Bangaku is said to be told by mountain monks more than about 400 years ago. The ritual ceremonial dance has been performed to pray for peace, security, and prosperity of the nation and people. Every year in summer each village holds a stage. The performers dance to the music with drums, whistles, or voices on a stage with their traditional curtain.

FEATURE

In Nikaho, there are five villages which has succeded Bangaku; Kamagadai, Toshi, Iseiji, Kodaki, and Yokooka. They inherit more than 15 programs which are diverse in kinds of dance. One of them is entertaining rather than ritualistic; a performer dives into audience and entertains people. It used to be passed down only to an eldest son in order not to spread it to outside, but now it is widely inherited.
